INFORMATION:

Sheriff Daniel E. Abbott reports that the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit conducted an investigation in reference to illegal narcotics activities taking place at a residence located in Antwerp Township. Narcotics detectives went to the residence in an attempt to make contact with the occupants of the residence. Upon pulling into the driveway of the residence detectives heard a loud continuous animal in distress type noise coming from the back yard area of the residence. Detectives observed a female subject with a wood board come from the same area as the loud noise into the driveway area. The female advised detectives that a pig had wandered into the back yard of the residence and the family pit bull had bitten the pig, the pig was trying to get away from the dog and the dog would not let the pig go. The female advised she was attempting to hit the animals with the board to try to get the dog to let the pig go but was unsuccessful. Detectives were able to deploy less lethal rounds from a less lethal shotgun which were successful in separating the dog and the pig. The pig ran away into the woods and its’s whereabouts are unknown. It is unknown where the pig came from or who the pigs owner is. The dog remained at the residence with the owner. Shortly thereafter a vehicle pulled in at the residence. The driver of this vehicle was identified as the 28 year old suspect. Detectives were speaking to the 28 year old suspect when the 28 year old suspect walked away from detectives toward the residence. Upon nearing the residence another detective approached the 28 year old suspect and advised that detectives would like to speak but as the 28 year old suspects actions and demeanor appeared to be agitated, for officer safety reasons detectives requested the 28 year old suspect take hands out from the sweatshirt hoodie pocket prior to talking. The 28 year old suspect refused to comply with detectives verbal commands. Detectives secured the 28 year old suspects hand at this time, which was still inside of the sweatshirt hoodie pocket. The 28 year old suspect attempted pull away from detectives and attempted to strike detectives, the 28 year old suspect was then taken to the ground and both hands were secured. No weapons were located and no injuries resulted from this interaction. In speaking to the 28 year old suspect detectives were advised that there was illegal narcotic paraphernalia inside the residence but detectives were not going to be allowed to go inside the house to search if they did not have a search warrant. Detectives were able to obtain a search warrant for the residence. The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit executed the search warrant at approximately 3:25PM on Thursday afternoon.

A search of the location was conducted pursuant to the search warrant. Located during the search was suspected paraphernalia used for smoking methamphetamine.

No arrests have been made regarding this investigation at this time.

The animal portion of the investigation was turned over to the Animal Control Division.
