NARRATIVE:

Sheriff Daniel E. Abbott reports that on January 27th, 2019, Lawton Fire department was dispatched to the 29000 block of 62nd avenue for a reported structure fire. Once fire arrived on scene it was determined that a couch was on fire inside the residence, which was unoccupied. While working the scene, Lawton Fire was notified of a male on scene who had tried to stab himself with a small knife. The fire department then called for a police response. Deputies from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s department arrived on scene and contacted the male who was very agitated. The male was waving a large butane lighter and was threatening both a fire fighter and a deputy. The subject refused deputies commands and was at taser point. He then rushed towards the deputy and was taken to the ground and subdued until additional units could respond. The deputy was assisted by several members of the Lawton Fire Department who did assist in restraining the individual until help arrived.

During the investigation it did appear as if the couch in the residence was intentionally set on fire and all the windows in a van at the residence were smashed out. The subject was lodged at the Van Buren County jail on 2 outstanding warrants and the investigation is ongoing regarding the arson. Once the investigation is completed, it will be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for review.
