Nature of Incident:  Operating while intoxicated causing death

 Incident #: 5739-18

Date & Time:  September 2nd, 2018 At 2028 Hours

Location:  28th Ave, West of 44th St, Waverly Township

Victim Information:  20 Year old female from Indiana, name withheld pending identification

Suspect information:  21 Year old male from Detroit, name withheld pending arraignment. 

Vehicle information:   2016 Chevrolet Malibu.

Seatbelt Usage:  It is believed that the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt. 

Alcohol Usage:   The driver was operating while intoxicated  


Sheriff Daniel Abbott reports that on September 2nd, 2018 at 2028 hours, Deputies were dispatched to the intersection of 28th avenue and 44th Street in Waverly Township for a single car personal injury crash. 

After arriving on scene, it was determined that the female passenger, who was entrapped in the vehicle, was unconscious and bleeding heavily.  Bloomingdale Fire Department used the jaws of life to free the passenger.  Due to the severity of her injuries, the female passenger was airlifted to Bronson Methodist Hospital via AIRCARE.  She later succumbed to her injuries at Bronson.

During the investigation, it was determined that the driver was operating under the influence of alcohol.  The vehicle left the roadway where it then crashed into a ditch. The driver was arrested and lodged at the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department for Operating while intoxicated causing death.  This crash will remain under investigation.
