Sheriff Dan Abbott reports that on Sunday July 8, 2018 Van Buren County Deputies were dispatched to a personal injury crash involving a motorcycle and a car, west bound I-94 near the 64.4 mile mark, west of Mattawan. Deputies arrived on scene to find the 32year old male laying on the ground with serious injuries.
Medical personnel from Mattawan Fire Department and Van Buren County EMS attended to the victim’s injuries, which included fractures, injured feet and legs, as well as significant road rash to his body. The victim was wearing his helmet which was also damaged in the crash. The victim was transported to Bronson Kalamazoo where he was treated for his injuries. The motorcycle sustained significant damage as it was laying on the ground, having separated, in two pieces.
Through the investigation Deputies learned that the motorcycle was traveling west bound passing several cars at a high rate of speed. The motorcycle crashed into another vehicle that was traveling in the right lane. The motorcycle then lost control and began to slide. The driver came off the motorcycle, also sliding on the roadway and into the median. The other vehicle sustained damage and was towed from the scene as well, however the driver of the car and his passenger were uninjured.
Deputies believe speed and driving, were a factor in this crash and the report will be submitted to the Van Buren County Prosecutors Office to review for possible charges.
