OWI Arrest, Operating ATV on M-43 5365-17

Nature of Incident:  OWI Arrest, Operating Off Road Vehicle (4 wheeler) on Public Roadway

Location: 27000 Block of M-43, Almena Township, Van Buren County


Sheriff Daniel E Abbott reports that on Sunday, September 24th a Deputy on patrol on M-43 in Almena Township observed a male driving an ATV in the middle of the East Bound driving lane.  A traffic stop was initiated and the driver was questioned as to why he was driving an off road vehicle (4 wheeler) upon the public highway.  During the course of questioning, the Deputy detected the odor of alcohol upon the driver's breath and initiated an investigation for possible drunk driving.  At the conclusion of the field investigation where the suspect was found to be almost twice the legal limit, he was arrested on charges of Operating Under the Influence of Liquor (OUIL) and Operating an Off Road Vehicle upon the Public Roadway and lodged at the Van Buren County Jail in Paw Paw.  This case has been forwarded to the Van Buren County Prosecutor's Office for their review and authorization of the charges. Suspects:        1) A 54 year old male, from Kalamazoo (Name withheld pending authorization of charges from the Van Buren County Prosecutor's Office and Arraignment)
