Nature of Incident:  

Car vs Bicyclist PI Crash

 Date & Time:   

Sunday, April 9, 2017, at 11:30 A.M. 

 Incident #:

1970-17

Location: 

 CR 354 just S. of 72nd Avenue, Porter Township, Van Buren County, State of Michigan.  

Victim/Bicyclist: 

67 year-old Janice Shelby of Kalamazoo, Michigan. 

Injuries to Victim/Bicyclist: 

Janice Shelby suffered a broken arm, broken hand, lacerations, abrasions, and bruising. 

Hospital: 

Janice Shelby was transported to Bronson Hospital, in Kalamazoo.  She is currently admitted and is listed in stable condition.   

 Suspect:

 35 year-old man from Lawton, Michigan (name withheld pending arraignment).  

Suspect Vehicle: 

1998 Chevrolet Lumina, green in color.

 Suspect Injuries:

 None  

 Alcohol/Drugs:

 Alcohol was not a factor in this crash, however it is believed that the suspect was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.  

Passengers:

None

Information:

Sheriff Daniel E. Abbott reports that on April 9th at approx. 11:30 A.M. deputies responded to a Car vs Bicyclist PI Crash on CR 354 S. of 72nd Avenue, in Porter Township.  Upon arrival deputies found that a 67 year-old bicyclist had been struck by a car and she sustained serious injuries. The investigation showed that the Chevrolet Lumina and the bicyclist were both travelling southbound on CR 354, just S. of 72nd Avenue. The Lumina then came up behind the bicyclist and struck her. Witnesses reported that the bicyclist was seen travelling southbound near the fog line/shoulder of the roadway when she was hit.  Deputies reported that the 35 year-old male driver of the Lumina appeared to under the influence of drugs and he was subsequently arrested. The suspect was lodged at the Van Buren County Jail for Possession of Marijuana and Operating a Motor Vehicle with the Presence of Drugs.  

The victim was transported to Bronson Hospital, in Kalamazoo.  She is currently admitted and she is listed in stable condition.  The victim has a long history of bicycling, is very experienced, and has bicycled in 7 different countries over her lifetime.  The victim in this incident requested that the “Share the Road” message be sent to the public and she asked that drivers please pay attention to bicyclist.   

Arrest:

The suspect was arrest and lodged at the Van Buren County Jail for Possession of Marijuana and Operating a Motor Vehicle with the Presence of Drugs
